Leather wallets

Two real leather wallets: a slim bifold cut for him and a zip wallet cut for her.

Buying guide: leather wallet

A good leather wallet is one you stop thinking about: it opens to the card you want, closes flat and still looks right years later. wulet makes two, each ₹ 399, and they are built for different ways of carrying. This guide explains the difference, what to check in any leather wallet, and how to look after the one you choose.

Two wallets, two ways of carrying

The slim bifold is cut for him. It is a classic fold-in-half wallet that goes into a trouser pocket and keeps its shape there. Folded, it measures 11.5 × 9 cm.

The zip wallet is cut for her. It is a longer, zip-around wallet of 19 × 10 cm that lives in a bag and keeps coins, notes and cards closed in. Nothing falls out when it is tipped upside down in a tote.

Neither is better; they answer different questions. If you carry your wallet on your body, the bifold makes sense. If it travels in a bag and you still carry coins and change, the zip wallet does.

What to look for in a leather wallet

Whichever shape you prefer, the same few things separate a wallet that lasts from one that sags:

  • How it closes. A bifold should close flat without forcing. A zip should run smoothly round the corners.
  • Stitching and edges. Stitching along every edge holds layers together under daily bending. Sealed, painted edges stop fraying.
  • Card slot count against your actual cards. Count what you carry today. Buying a wallet with far more slots than you need invites a bulky wallet, which our piece on slim vs bulky wallets explains.
  • Real leather. Leather softens and darkens with use; imitation materials tend to crack instead. Our leather guide covers how to tell the difference.

What's inside each wallet

The slim bifold, ₹ 399

  • Six card slots
  • A full-length note section
  • Two slip pockets behind the cards
  • Stitched along every edge

The zip wallet, ₹ 399

  • Eight card slots
  • A zipped coin pocket
  • Two note sections
  • A metal zip with a leather pull

Both are made from leather sourced from LWG-certified tanneries, which are audited independently on chemicals, water, energy, waste and traceability. Both are made by TARS Creations, and the wulet symbol on each is debossed, never printed.

Which shade to choose

The bifold comes in the four classics: black, dark brown, tan and navy. The zip wallet comes in mustard, tomato red, sky blue and dusty pink, along with black and tan. Within each wallet, every shade costs the same.

A simple way to decide:

  1. Black goes with everything and shows the least wear.
  2. Dark brown and tan pair naturally with brown belts and shoes, and tan ages to a warmer colour over time.
  3. Navy is a quiet alternative to black that still feels a little different.
  4. The brights are easy to find in a bag and make a small, cheerful statement.

How to look after a leather wallet

Leather needs less care than people expect. A few habits go a long way:

  • Empty it now and then. Old receipts stretch the leather and spoil the shape. Clear them out once a week.
  • Avoid the back pocket squeeze. Sitting on a full bifold all day bends it out of shape. If you drive or sit for long hours, move it to a front pocket.
  • Wipe with a soft cloth. Use a barely damp cloth for marks, and let the wallet dry naturally.
  • Watch the monsoon. Damp leather can pick up marks or mildew if it is shut away wet. Dry it in open air before you put it away.
