Leather bags

What to look for in leather bags

A bag carries weight all day, so a few details matter more than they would on a wallet:

• Strap fixings. Check where the strap meets the bag. This is where weight pulls hardest.
• Adjustable length. A strap you can shorten for a crowded market and lengthen over a jacket is far more useful than a fixed one.
• Closure that suits the bag. A snap or magnetic flap opens with one hand; a zip suits things you want sealed in.
• Lining. A lining protects the leather from pens, keys and the odd leaking bottle, and makes small things easier to find.
• Real leather. It softens and moulds to you, where coated materials tend to crack at the folds.

How to choose between them

Ask yourself what you need within reach:

• Phone and one card: the phone sling. Good for morning walks, travel days and weddings where you want your hands free.
• Phone, cards, keys and a lip balm: the small crossbody. Light enough to forget you are wearing it.
• All of that plus a bottle, a scarf, a small notebook or a tiffin: the compact tote.

A tote for the office and a sling for the evening make a useful pair.

Which shade

Each bag has its own shades, and every shade of a bag costs the same.

• Phone sling: black, tan, navy and sky blue.
• Small crossbody: tan, black, mustard, tomato red and dusty pink.
• Compact tote: tan, black, dusty pink and mustard.

Black and tan are the easiest to wear with everything. Mustard and tomato red lift plain kurtas, denim and whites. Dusty pink and sky blue are soft and work well in summer.

How to look after a leather bag

• Don't overload it. Leather stretches to fit what you carry. A tote stuffed every day will lose its shape.
• Stuff it when stored. Fill an empty bag with soft paper so it keeps its form, and keep it in a cotton cover, not plastic.
• Wipe spills straight away. Blot, don't rub, with a soft dry cloth.
• Dry it gently after rain. Let a damp bag dry in open air at room temperature, never in sun or near a heater. See leather care in monsoon.
